Our mentors are writers at the top of their game. They are chosen for their writing and teaching accomplishments. We have a rule that all Gold Dust mentors must have published at least five books (often the figure is many more) andhave won, judged or been nominated for major National and International literary prizes such as The Booker, The Costa, The Women’s Prize, the Folio, The Impac and others. Many have been RLF Fellows, meaning they are particularly skilled at working one to one. In addition, all have taught on the best writing courses and many are, or have been, senior professors and course directors. These writing programmes include Creative Writing MAs such as UEA, Bath Spa, Goldsmith’s, Cambridge, Oxford, Sheffield Hallam, or for The Arvon Foundation, Guardian Masterclasses and The Faber Academy.
Who is it For? For a developing or emerging writer, perhaps working on a second or third novel, or for those switching genre or ending an MA and wondering what to do next; or for any writer who would like tailored, highly individualised time with one of our hand-picke elite group of writer-mentors, we offer: The Gold Star Bespoke. The fee for this is £4000.
How it works: You buy 18 hours of the mentor’s time which includes their reading time (other courses make no accommodation for this immensely valuable service – to be read by a writer of the calibre of our team – which explains why some writing courses offer so little of it, mainly relying on the peer review or workshop model). At your first meeting, (usually in London, or if preferred, via Skype), you will discuss exactly how you would like to make use of this precious time. Perhaps you’d like the mentor to read your last novel and advise you on the new one and then meet a couple of times to discuss agents or your current work. Or perhaps you’d like to meet every three months to help you stick to a deadline, and spread these meetings over a couple of years. The mentor will advise over realistic deadlines and goals and with the highly individualised Gold Star Bespoke you can be sure to get the writing input you truly need and can’t find elsewhere.
Gold Star Bespoke is a highly competitive, selective scheme and at the discretion of the writer in question. Please make an enquiry to us at our usual email address if interested and we will discuss details and application with you. The full fee is payable on acceptance.
‘On Louise Doughty – words simply fail me. She is the most wonderful mentor I could ever have hoped to have. She is my guiding light and has provided advice on everything: from getting to the end of a first draft, when to send the novel out to agents, public speaking and the business of writing life. I am more grateful than I can ever say.’
– Stephanie Scott, recently mentored by Louise Doughty, who just signed a six figure deal for her new novel The Sentence, to be published in 2019.
(Please note some mentors add VAT to this fee – please ask for the mentor you are interested in and we will advise)
